Insurance options

When preparing for a move, it’s important to understand your insurance options and how your belongings will be protected. Have you thought about what would happen if something valuable were damaged during the move? It’s always better to consider the worst-case scenario in advance.
For example, imagine that the $3,000 TV you recently purchased from Costco is damaged during the move. Would the moving company replace it with a new TV, or would you receive only a small payment of around $30? These are important details to understand before the movers arrive at your home.
In California, moving companies generally charge the same rate regardless of the value of the belongings being moved. Most moves are charged by the hour, so your final bill depends on how much time is required to complete the move. The State of California requires moving companies to provide basic weight-based liability coverage of $0.60 per pound, per article.
For example, if your dining room table weighs 100 lbs. and is damaged during the move, the moving company would be liable for only $60.00 (100 lbs. × $0.60). Although this amount may seem low compared with the actual value of the item, this is the required basic level of liability. At Dana Point Moving Company, however, we offer additional insurance options to provide greater protection for your belongings during the move.

Option A: Released Value Protection

Our moving rate includes Released Value Protection, which provides basic liability coverage of $0.60 per pound, per article.
For example, if your stainless-steel refrigerator weighs approximately 250 lbs. and gets scratched during the move, you would receive $150 in compensation. Similarly, if your plasma TV weighs approximately 60 lbs. and is cracked during the move, the compensation would be $36.

Option B: Actual Value Protection

Dana Point Moving Company offers In-house Actual Value Protection for televisions and refrigerators. This option is simple and easy to understand.
The insurance cost is 10% of the declared value of the item, with a maximum declared value of $1,500. For example, if you declare your refrigerator to be worth $1,200, you would pay an additional $120 upfront.
If your insured refrigerator is scratched during the move, you would be reimbursed for the declared value within one or two business days after the move.
Please note that this insurance must be purchased before the move begins and cannot be purchased once the moving process is already underway. All remaining belongings will be covered under Released Value Protection, which provides basic liability coverage of $0.60 per pound, per article, regardless of the type of item or whether the damage is internal or external.
